THE TIME MICHAEL JORDAN REMINDED ME TO STAY HUMBLE

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I like many other kids idolized one man. The man on the Nike commercial. Gatorade commercial, Hanes, you name it. He even had a movie or two or 3 if you include Come Fly With Me. But most importantly he was a God on the basketball court. That man was none other than Michael Jordan.

As I grew as a young man, I plastered images and quotes from MJ all around my environment. His commitment to competition was exactly what I wanted for my life.

That was…until maybe 2 minutes and 35 seconds into Michael Jordan’s Hall of Fame acceptance speech. What proceeded for the next 20 minutes or so was, still - til this day - an absolutely soul crushing sequence of a man displaying just how vein and unappreciative he was for the gifts and opportunities laid upon him. From Buzz Peterson who “never played against me” as MJ put it, to a stomping of Jerry Kraus, to his “you guys still gotta pay us” statement. It was cringe-worthy yet must see TV all at once.

This article isn’t about MJ but a reminder, an inspiration I’d say to stay humble, remember that even in our grandest times, we still have opportunities to lift others up and show our true collaborative and supportive spirit. Maybe it’s just here at Breakin Dad, but the most fulfilling part of life is the experience that comes from being gracious in our shining moments. Subtle reminder for the day ahead.

Thanks Michael Jordan
