BUILDING AND MERGING A NEW FAMILY...ABOVE AND BEYOND RACE

Crazy to think, but it was just over 51 years ago that interracial marriage was illegal in all 50 states of the country.  Without going into too much detail, the idea of a black man, marrying a white woman was not only unheard of but considered a deadly offense in may parts of the country.  Which is why in today's world, where 22% of black men are in interracial marriages, we see a very clear reference to racial advancement in our world, even when there's a critical concern around cultural safety and respect in our domestic society today.  Sometimes interracial marriage isn't the first stop on the marriage train.  Second turns at marriage may broaden perspective of potential suitors - even when an existing family is involved.  Sean Singleton of California tells a thoughtful story of blending his family of 3 mixed race kids with that of hiw wife's two young white boys.  In his story he helps other dads who may be experiencing a similar family construct, understand the complexity and joy of merging two loving yet racially different families.
