HBO'S ESME & ROY ANIMATED SERIES IS A HOMERUN FOR KIDS AND PARENTS
As a dad of two I have learned the variance in kid personalities. My oldest son is a gem of patience and care, while my youngest has earned the nickname Little Dragon (yep - the same nickname given to Bruce Lee as a kid) because of his feistiness. He's a joy of a kid that always warms my heart, but I've had some challenges in controlling his anger when the little 2 year old gets upset. This is why, when I came accross the new HBO animated series Esme & Roy, created by a wonderful black woman by the name of Kay Wilson Stallings, I immediately got excited. The story follows Esme, a young black girl (played by a real life young black actress Millie Davis), and her buddy Roy, who babysit monsters and help them problem solve with strategies all parents can learn from. My favorite is one of the mindfulness strategies - Glitter Jar - where Esme shakes a glitter filled jar with the monsters, watches the glitter settle and calms the monsters into a better mood. How in the heck did I not think of that?! What I love most about this show is that it features black talent on screen, in animation, and behind the camera - the Trifecta we're looking for as film and TV works to create a more diverse representation of our and other diverse cultures. In general, I believe HBO is doing an amazing job at bringing cultural perspective to life and this is just another great example. Esme and Roy is now streaming on HBO and airs Saturdays at 9:30am EST.
